The DogBox Project began in 2012 as a Mandela Day initiative with a simple but impactful goal: to bring people together for 67 minutes to paint 67 kennels as a tribute to Nelson Mandela. The response was overwhelming, and what began as a single event blossomed into a year-round mission, with DogBox hosting kennel-decorating events that bring teams, communities, and organizations together to make a difference in the lives of shelter animals.

Since our founding, we’ve partnered with companies like Old Mutual, Wonga, Achievement Awards Group, ProMeal, Hyprop (CapeGate & Willow Bridge Centre’s), Primall (Stellenbosch Square), and Tyger Valley Centre. And while our Mandela Day event remains our flagship event each year, our ongoing initiatives have resulted in near 2000 kennels donated to date.

The Dogbox Project is a registered non-profit organisation. We are also a Public Benefit Organisation (PBO number: 930066701) and VAT registered. This means that we may provide Section 18A receipts for your donations so that you can claim some tax back on your kind donations. If you require a tax deduction receipt for a donation, please email us at info@dogboxproject.co.za.

How It Works:

Our events bring together teams of friends, family members, or colleagues – who work together to decorate readymade dog kennels with paint, decorations, and their own creative flair. Here’s how participants contribute to making a difference:

  • Kennel Painting & Decorating: Depending on the host/company, paint will be supplied or each team will be tasked to bring their own paint supplies. Decorations are always welcome and can be added as finishing touches.
  • Nominate a Shelter: Depending on the host/company, teams can nominate the shelter they would like their decorated kennel go to, ensuring each contribution directly benefits a chosen cause. Alternatively the host also has the privlage to pre-select beneficiaries.
  • Providing Comfort: Every kennel is donated alongside a cozy blanket and a bag of dog food, providing additional comfort and nourishment for the shelter animals.
  • Direct Impact: On the day of the event, local animal shelters are invited to collect the kennels completed by the teams, so they go straight to shelters in need.

The DogBox Project is more than just a volunteer activity; it’s a meaningful way to show compassion, foster teamwork, and brighten the lives of animals who need it most. Join us in adding your unique touch to a kennel and help us spread warmth and comfort to shelter animals across South Africa.
